Nishimura's AUTUMN DAY is a large canvas (35.5 x 60 inches) of a clearing in the foreground set off in the background by a screen of tall trees displaying their varied and brightly colored leaves, while a number of lighter hued bare tree trunks danced across the foreground, carefully defining the pictorial space.
AUTUMN DAY can hardly be considered a painting of a defined view. It is in fact much more akin to music or poetry. It serves to evoke the collective ideal of the "autumn day": the season, the sight, the smell. The painting is about the flavor and spirit of Autumn, its unique ambiance.
