MEGAN MARDEN
I believe in painting as a direct expression of a singular experience. I used to select my subjects, and arrange my setups carefully with symbolism and narrative in mind. More recently, I've adopted a more direct approach of painting whatever is in front of me at a given time. This redirects focus to the more implicit elements of the painting - the way it's painted, the light and the air around the objects, etc. This flexibility has also allowed me to explore a more genuine, and less intellectualized emotional depth in my paintings, such as when painting the tea set my grandmother gave me just before she died - a subject which would not have fit into my previously curated narrative.
