Painted gestures and snippets of color present a world of what things are but not what they look like. Consider that the air around is just as visible as water in a glass, or a mountain viewed in the distance is only a small pyramid sitting on a window sill. Inventing scenes made up of vivid shapes and color, the work imparts sensations: the moment before it rains, the sound of a book page turning, the feeling one gets sitting in a group of friends, or a crowd of silence. The work presents a world of forms that are placeable for each viewer in a different way: a humid sky, a bird in flight, a house on the horizon, a plant on the sill, when turned at an oblique angle, appear from another dimension, contain a slight lift, a vibration, a change in gravity, lit, perhaps, from a different sun.

James Lipovac is an artist working in Philadelphia who has exhibited internationally at the NES Foundation in Iceland, the Léhon Abbaye in France, and in the 2015 ArtVenice 3 exhibition. Recently he was an artist in residence at the Chashama Workspace program in New York City, where he was also a recent receipt of a FDF grant from the Pratt institute. He had a solo exhibition at the Delaware Center for Contemporary Art and had work in the Noyes Museum. He has shown extensively in New York City, at the Ethan Cohen Gallery, Loft 594, Scope Art Fair, BRICarts, Pit Gallery, and at the Conde Nast building, among others. James received a BFA in painting from the Maryland Institute College of Art and his MFA from Indiana University. His work is in numerous collections including Vice President Joe Biden, the Sprint Corporation, and the city of Léhon, France.
